Choctaw Code Talkers Statue Unveiled

  • On this Memorial Day Weekend, as we honor those who served, let’s remember the legacy of the 19 young Choctaw soldiers being honored by this sculpture, and were the first to use their native language to confuse the enemy, essentially turning the tide during World War I.

  • On May 22, 2025, the Choctaw Code Talkers sculpture was dedicated on the grounds of the Choctaw Cultural Center. Thanks to the Choctaw Nation and especially Nuchi Nashoba, president of the Choctaw Code Talkers Association for including AFdOKC at this memorable event.

  • Alliance Française d'Oklahoma City attended the dedication ceremony and shared messages of congratulations, best wishes and respect for the Choctaw Nation and the Code Talkers’ significant achievements from AFdOKC, Consul General of France, Valérie Baraban, Cultural Attaché Bettina Gardelles and Oklahoma’s Honorary Consul of France, Grant Moak.

  • We also shared messages of gratitude from Villa Albertine artists in residency Vincent Hazard and Daniel Alexandre, who were welcomed so warmly and assisted in their research in creating the graphic novel that tells the story of Joseph Oklahombi and the Choctaw Code Talkers.

  • As many may remember, on November 3, 1989, the Chevalier de l’Ordre National du Merite (Knight of the National Order of Mérit) Medal was presented in honor of the Choctaw Code Talkers by former Prime Minister of France, Pierre Mesmer on the steps of the Oklahoma State Capitol.

  • The memorial sculpture can be seen at the Choctaw Cultural Center near Durant, in southeast Oklahoma and can be viewed below
